The Worthing Children’s parade are piloting an initiative that could benefit children taking part in the Parade and workshops happening in your child’s school.  We are offering the opportunity to gain an Arts Award. This will be fully funded by the Worthing Children’s parade, the usual moderation cost minimum £20+ dependant on level of entry + the cost of resources and tuition.

We are piloting this scheme this year but hope to be able to offer this to more children who are involved in parade and workshops in the years to come.

This year we can offer up to 40 children, who are interested in the Arts, the opportunity to gain an Arts Award at either:

Explore level

How will this work?

The parade is working with the community artist Claire Lemmon who will help deliver the Arts Award program, through a series of after school Arts workshops taking place in June. Claire and myself will provide you with all the information that your child will need to complete the award.

St Andrews High School for Boys have kindly agreed to host the workshops in their fantastic Art Department where your child will have access to their state-of-the-art facilities.

We have planned the delivery of the Arts Awards program as follows:

  • A fully developed resources pack for each level Explore or Bronze, this will contain all the worksheets for each of the activities that your child will need to complete the Arts award at either level. Your child will then be able to complete the majority of work during the after-school workshops with Claire however there will be some tasks that young people will need to work on in their own time.

  • You will have 3 FREE after school workshops run by Claire at St Andrews High School for Boys- The workshops with Claire are designed to deliver the arts award and will run on the 11th, 18th and 25th June from 3:30pm for 1 hour, ALL resources will be provided. School or parental drop off and pick up will be required- unless arrangements can be made with your child's school.  Attendance to every workshop is desirable but not essential.

  • In addition to these workshops there will be an additional FREE workshop held at St Andrews High School for Boys, to help students prepare for their moderation.  This workshop will take place early July (the date to be confirmed) Attendance essential.

  • There will be a Presentation event held at St Andrews High School for Boys at the end of the course, all participating students will need to attend.  (the date to be confirmed) Attendance essential.

  • The moderation will take place at St Andrews High School for Boys towards the end of the summer term. (the date to be confirmed) and your child will be awarded the Arts award qualification by the end of July.

So, I am interested, what next?

This Arts award opportunity would suit any child who enjoys the arts subjects, however to take advantage of this opportunity then your child will need to attend a school taking part in the parade, take part in their schools ‘Big make parade workshop’ in school and attend the day of the parade.

If you happily fulfil the criteria above then please:

Email the names of your child/children who wish to take part along with the school they attend to: theworthingchildrensparade@gmail.com

This will then book their space on the After-school workshops with Claire at St Andrew’s High School for Boys. Spaces are limited.

What will your child do?

There will be some requirements students entered will need to meet:

  • Attend and participate in the Worthing Children’s Parade ‘Big make’ workshop in school. (Photographic evidence of their making attendance at this workshop will full fill one of the criteria)

  • Attend the day of the parade either walking with the parade or drumming in the samba band (Photographic evidence of their making attendance at this workshop will full fill one of the criteria)

  • Complete the information in the pack provided (we will send this on)

  • Attend the Free workshop provided by Claire.

  • Present all their evidence in a sketchbook or document wallet.

  • Attend a presentation event (venue, date and times to be confirmed)

Claire Lemmon Community Artist- Info

My name is Claire Lemmon and I am a community artist living in Worthing and working mainly with children and families across Sussex.  I run a number of after school art clubs in Worthing primary schools, and am responsible for both 2D and 3D regular art workshops in 3 different learning centres for alternatively educated children.  I love the way children think and work hard to encourage independent creative thought and build self-esteem through creative endeavours. I also believe that a sense of humour is paramount in most things.

I build large lanterns and structures for Adur Sea of Light and Shoreham Light Festival, and also run the school outreach and the very popular family 'Creation Session' for Adur Sea of Lights. I also run workshops for Worthing Children's Parade, Worthing Tide of Lights and other events, primarily working with recycled/recyclable materials. I take all sorts of children through all sorts of Arts Awards, work occasionally for the fantastic Creative Waves and, when I have time, build my own (generally, 3D) work for Worthing Artist Open Houses. I may have met you in a previous role as an ’Outreach Learning Facilitator' for Worthing Museum, something I've only recently given up, due to other work commitments.

Some things I'm working on at the moment include planning for a 3D Sculpture week at TAB juniors (I'm currently building a large Easter Island head using milk cartons), prepping for my usual session on the Steyne for Worthing Children's Parade, putting the finishing touches to a series of heritage walks on the prom for Creative Waves, making cardboard hats for Re Claim recycling festival in Shoreham and building some large fish for a Same Sky spectacular.
